It is part of the Richmondshire Leisure Trusts mission to help improve the health and fitness of the population of Richmondshire by offering a wide and varied range of activities. Activities don't always need to be high internsity, vigorous activities. Why not come and join in some of our activities at Richmond Pool and get the benefits associated with physical activity.
Activities for Over 50’s
At the Richmondshire Leisure Trust facilities we offer a number of activities which are open to over 50’s. This includes any of the swimming sessions that we have on offer at Richmond swimming pool. Furthermore all of the facilities we have on offer at Richmond sports complex are open to those over 50 years old. All of the classes we run at Richmond Sports Complex and Richmond swimming pool are open to those over 50 years old also.
More details on these classes and facilities can be found throughout this website.
Free swimming for 60
Richmondshire Leisure Trust has been successful in securing government funding in order to be able to offer free swimming to older people aged 60 at the Richmond Swimming Pool from April 1 2009 for a period of two years. This is being funded by the government through the Department of Media, Culture and Sport (DCMS).
Why offer Free Swimming?
This programme is seen as a major way in which we can create more incentives for people to lead an active lifestyle. The government has a target to increase participation in sport by 2 million by 2012. Swimming has a wide appeal and over 13% of the adult population goes swimming regularly.
It is one of the most popular activities for women and older people and brings health benefits such as reducing heart disease. By offering free swimming we are aiming to target the least active and remove any financial barriers to participation. Swimming is a great sport for families to take part together.
Registration for Free Swimming
Everyone who wishes to swim will have to apply for a swimming card. This will be plastic swipe card that will need to be presented every time a person comes to swim. This will enable the centre to record the Monitoring & Evaluation information that we have to present to DCMS. The cost of this registration will only be £1, thereafter there will be no further charges.
To register just go to Richmond swimming pools reception with a proof of age such as a driving license, pension book or bus pass.
