and is a form of martial art. Karate is widely practiced all over the
world by a wide variety of people of all shapes, size, sex and ability. Ishinryu karate (meaning 'All of one heart') was founded by David 'Ticky'
Donovan, 8th Dan OBE.
Sensei Donovan was a member of the English National Squad and won the British Championships in 1973/74/75. As English and British coach he won the World Championships five times in succession. The style is a mixture of Shokotan, Wado-ryu and Kyokushinkai. The club has a recognised grading syllabus from 8th kyu up to Dan grades. Richmond Ishin Ryu Karate Club is part of Ishinryu and affiliated to Karate England, the recognised governing body of karate in England. The club also has links, and regularly trains, with the Sedgefield based club run by Sensei Heatherington 1st Dan and the Sunderland based club run by Sensei Gillespie 4th Dan.
